Travelogue

  • The travel convenience in the core area of Gubei is directly maximized by it

This time, I came to Shanghai to deeply check into the niche location of Gubei Overseas Chinese Town, and specifically chose to stay at Gubei Garden Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao. Originally, I only chose it for the scenery of the Golden City Road, but after staying for three days, I realized that the transportation and surrounding facilities here completely hit all the comfort points of Changning Gubei leisure tourism. Even tourists like me who don't like crowded people have arranged their itinerary to be smooth and relaxed.
The location of the hotel can be regarded as the "travel hub" of the Gubei area. It is less than 500 meters' walk from Exit 3 of Shuicheng Road Station on Line 10 to the hotel's main entrance. You don't have to take a detour with your luggage. It only takes 20 minutes to take Line 10 directly from Hongqiao Railway Station, and you don't have to queue up at the station entrance for ride hailing services. Friends who drive here don't have to worry at all. The hotel comes with sufficient free exclusive parking spaces. Parking in a hard to find location in the core area of Gubei is a blessing for self driving tourists, as they can find hotels that don't have to compete for parking spaces. If you want to go to Hongqiao Airport, you can take the Yan'an Elevated Road for 15 minutes directly, without having to rush through the congested traffic during the morning rush hour. You also don't have to rush out two or three hours in advance to catch an early flight.
The commuting efficiency to the core scenic spots is unbelievably high. It only takes 3 minutes to walk directly to the Golden City Road Ginkgo Pedestrian Street, without crowding the crowd on Yuyuan Road. Follow the trail covered with fallen leaves and head south. Along the way, you can pass by many Japanese bakeries and exotic restaurants hidden in old western-style houses. Walking all the way, you can reach the core business district of Gubei. The autumn ginkgo photos taken are even less crowded with passersby. It takes only 10 minutes to walk to Gubei Wealth Center. Whether it's for business connections or checking in at popular Japanese supermarkets, there's no need to take a taxi to a designated location. After meals, you can take a stroll around the entire area. Walking to the other side for 20 minutes is Shanghai Zoo, and taking a direct bus takes half an hour to reach the Soong Ching Ling Mausoleum, without having to take a detour or transfer in the city center.
There are plenty of surprises hidden in the surrounding dining resources. Just a 5-minute walk downstairs is the Gubei food circle, offering authentic Japanese style grilled meat, Korean cuisine, local time-honored brands that have been open for decades, and specialty restaurants from various countries. You don't have to travel half a city to check in at internet famous restaurants, and you can enjoy authentic exotic flavors downstairs. Within a 10 minute walk, there are many niche cafes and independent bookstores located in old villas. If you get tired of strolling, simply turn in and sit for half an hour to avoid the crowds on the Golden City Road and steal a moment of relaxation for yourself. I casually stumbled into a Japanese bakery that had been open for over a decade. The freshly baked sea salt rolls were so fragrant that even the people standing at the door lined up in small teams, and I didn't have to do any strategy to dig up the treasure shop.
Even if you want to go to the scenic spots far away, there are more than a dozen lines passing by the bus station at the entrance of the hotel, directly reaching Jing'an Temple, Xujiahui, and Hongqiao Business District. If you don't want to take the subway, you can take a double deck sightseeing bus to slowly swing under the wutong tree in Gubei. The exotic street scenery along the way is more interesting than taking a taxi. During the three days I stayed, I didn't even open the taxi app. I had to walk and take the subway to explore all the locations on Golden City Road, Gubei Business District, and Shanghai Zoo.
On the day of check-out, I dragged my suitcase slowly to the subway station, holding a butterfly pastry that I had just bought from a local old brand. Having stayed in Gubei so many times, Gubei Garden Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao is one of the few choices that can balance the "golden city road landscape, convenient transportation, and freedom to browse and eat". Next time I come to Shanghai to explore a niche spot in Gubei, I will definitely book here as soon as possible.Show more

  • Caught the relaxed smoke and fire of Gubei next to the Golden City Road

This time I came to Shanghai to escape the crowd in the city center and find a place where I can slowly feel the atmosphere of Gubei as a hometown of overseas Chinese. A friend who has lived in Shanghai for ten years directly recommended Gubei Garden Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao to me, saying that it was hidden in the shade of wutong trees on the Golden City Road, and it was an old brand foreign hotel in Gubei that had been open for many years. You can catch the unique slow rhythm evening wind in Gubei by opening the window. At the moment I walked into the gate with my suitcase, the lush camphor trees in the courtyard caught my eye, and I truly felt the unique relaxed texture of the Changning Gubei area.
It only takes 7 minutes to walk from Shuicheng Road Station on Line 10, without taking a detour in the subway. Follow the Ginkgo Trail on Golden City Road for two steps to get there. When checking in, the front desk staff brought the unique warmth of Gubei. They heard that I was a tourist visiting Gubei, so they specially arranged a high-rise city view room for me. They also hand drawn a nearby niche walking route for me, saying that walking along the Golden City Road towards Ruby Road, you can see many Japanese bakeries and niche cafes hidden in old western-style houses along the way, which is much more interesting than crowded internet celebrity check-in points. The moment I opened the door, I was amazed. The whole french window was facing the roof of the western-style house in Gubei. The wutong tree crown in the distance was gently swaying in the wind. The tea table beside the window was set up in advance with the hotel's special sweet scented osmanthus tea. The warm fragrance came out, and the tiredness of the journey was relieved in half.
What surprised me the most was the tranquil courtyard provided by the hotel, where camphor trees planted for decades covered the sky and the air was filled with the fragrance of leaves. The next day, I got up early and took a walk along the trail in the courtyard. The residents of Gubei who were doing morning exercises were practicing Tai Chi under the trees, and the guests of different nationalities who passed by smiled and nodded to greet you, completely devoid of the crowded feeling of hotels in the city center. The details of the hotel are all about the steadfastness of an old foreign-related hotel. The sound insulation in the rooms is far beyond expectations. Even if there is a pedestrian flow on the Golden City Road downstairs, you can still sleep soundly with the door closed. The mattress is just right in softness and hardness. After a day of running around and lying down, the soreness and bloating all over your body quickly dissipated.
The location is even more convenient. Walk downstairs for 3 minutes and then enter the Golden City Road Pedestrian Street. You can walk along the path covered with ginkgo leaves in slippers for an afternoon without taking a taxi. The autumn sunset dyes the whole street into gold. Japanese shops and exotic restaurants along the way are hidden under the wutong tree, and the photos taken are full of atmosphere. Ten minutes' walk to the other side is the Gubei Wealth Center. If you get tired of shopping, you can easily find a Japanese food store that has been open for over a decade and sit down to avoid the crowds in the city center. On days when I didn't want to run far, I sat at the window tea house in the hotel for an afternoon, ordering a osmanthus cake with osmanthus tea. I watched the camphor leaves swaying slowly outside the window, and even time seemed to be stretched out.
The dining experience of the old foreign-related hotels is also very authentic. In addition to the regular Cantonese Dim sum and Shanghai local snacks, the buffet table for breakfast also prepared a lot of Japanese bread and western cold dishes. Even the miso soup that Gubei residents often eat is very authentic. After strolling through the Golden City Road at night and returning to the hotel, you can also enjoy authentic Benbang style braised fish slices at the restaurant, without having to travel far to taste the authentic taste of old Shanghai.
When my three-day trip to Shanghai ended and I left with my suitcase, I was still carrying a sea salt roll that I had just bought from a nearby Japanese bakery. Compared with the crowded online red hotel in the center of the city, the comfort of Gubei Garden Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao is the relaxation hidden in the shade of Gubei wutong trees. Next time I visit a niche spot in Shanghai's overseas Chinese hometown, I will definitely choose this place as soon as possible. There is no need to rush through the itinerary, just take a leisurely walk along the Golden City Road for an afternoon. This is the most important way to open up for slow travel in Shanghai.Show more
